From: REAP, LLC. | Retirement & Estate Advisors & Professionals

“Live long and prosper.” The first half of the famous “Star Trek” salute is easier to achieve than ever thanks to advancements in modern medicine and better information to guide your lifestyle choices. But prospering requires both careful and creative planning to keep up with whatever changes you encounter in your golden years. While it’s impossible to predict the future, here are three questions to consider when planning for your retirement.

How long will you live?
Many factors affect individual longevity such as genetics, diet, exercise, stress levels and even social activity. You can start with a life expectancy calculator, but it doesn’t hurt to extend this number when planning for retirement for added peace of mind. Reduce the risk of running out of assets by planning on being around for a long time.

How much will you need?
The 4 percent rule is a commonly used standard for retirement asset spending, but it can often depend on your mix of assets and investment allocation. Most experts agree that you’ll spend about 80 percent of what you currently do when you’re retired, so now is the time to examine your spending habits and determine the level of luxury you are comfortable with.

Have you saved enough?
Although retiree confidence in having enough saved for a comfortable retirement is increasing, confidence is not a predictor of asset longevity. You may choose to work longer and retire later to build up your nest egg. Get in touch to determine a target number that will give you the kind of lifestyle you want during retirement.
