The job market has fluctuated quite a bit in the past year, with the pandemic making things unstable for just about everyone. As we press forward into a new normal, it’s important to take stock of marketable skills and make meaningful choices that will translate into income. If you’ve recently been laid off or just want to make some extra money, there are several things you can do to make the process easier. Read on for ideas on how to make the most of your skills and find a new way to earn money.
Consider all your college options
Whether you’re just starting to think about continuing education or are ready to go back to school to pursue a new career path, there are several options these days that will help you make the most of your skills. Earning a degree in IT means opening the door for lots of job opportunities, and you can do it from the comfort of your own home with online courses. With these programs you can also earn extra certificates in order to amplify your resume and ensure you get the job of your dreams.
Think about your strengths
You may already have talents and skills that are highly marketable and don’t even realize it. Social media management, typing, traveling with kids, and caring for animals are all examples of skills that can be monetized if you know where to begin. You might start a blog, monetize a YouTube channel, or apply for a copywriting job that allows you to work from home. You could even start your own business as a pet sitter or social media manager, or sell thrifted vintage items on a platform like Poshmark or Etsy. Think about where your strengths lie and how you can use them to your advantage, as this is a great way to become an entrepreneur or get started in a new field.
Consider temporary work
If you’re just looking for a temporary way to make some extra money rather than a new career, consider looking for a side-gig such as driving for a delivery or rideshare company or doing odd-jobs for people through a task service. This is perfect for those who need a cash infusion and have a stellar driving record, as well as those who don’t mind running errands or dealing with traffic. If you have your own car and some experience with things like putting together furniture or cleaning spaces, this kind of temp work might be just what you’re looking for.
Take your hobby to the next level
Unsure about whether you want a new career or just some extra cash? Try turning a hobby into something you can sell, such as baking, painting, crafting, or even digital goods. These days there are tons of online platforms for creators who want to find customers, so you’ll have plenty of options when it’s time to make money. While these platforms do take a small cut of the profits, they’re perfect for makers who can’t afford to start a business from the ground up. Do some research and read up on the various selling sites to get an idea of which one might be best for your needs and budget. Keep in mind that if you’re selling food items, you’ll need to take local laws and regulations into consideration before you get started.
Finding a new job can be stressful, even if it’s only part-time. No matter where you are in the search for making money, take time for self-care to ensure that you aren’t overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. Find a community of like-minded individuals–either locally or on social media–to get support through the process.
